Life is the ultimate game. It is THE game, the game above all games.
The game of life has a rule book all its own, though we’re not exactly sure who wrote it or why it even exists. None of us volunteered to play, but no one is excused from participation. No other game has such mandatory qualities.
In the game of life, the clock doesn’t stop. You can’t call time out. There are no referees or umpires and there is no slow motion or instant replay. Both your first and final breath will be taken as a player in this game, one at the opening bell and one at the final buzzer. You’re either all in or you’re all done. There is no overtime.
Winning at the game of life is much different than winning at football or baseball. Life is quite a bit more, shall we say, undefined. Most games are over when time runs out. Life is over when OUR time runs out, a sobering distinction between most games and THE game.
Going undefeated in sports is about performing better than your opponent. Going undefeated in the game of life is about understanding that you are the opponent. It is a life-long arm-wrestling match of us against our thoughts. It is the right arm of our peace of mind battling the left arm of our fears.
Here’s a 3-point plan for making sure you’ll never lose again in the game of life.
- LOVE THE MADNESS
Life is tough, unpredictable and often unfair. Understand that in the game of life it is always raining on someone’s part of the field. Today it might you, but eventually the sun will return. Life is playing us as much as we are playing it. Love the inexplainable madness of it all.
- TRUST THE PROCESS
It is rather plain to see that nature is in charge. We orbit the sun. We breathe the air. We live our lives as tiny specks of human energy on a timid fleck of dust called Earth. The creative forces underpinning our existence are vast, intricate and beyond our comprehension. Trust the process. We’ve made it this far.
- BE YOURSELF.
Oscar Wilde said, “Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.” Perhaps the best way to maintain an undefeated record in life is to always respect and appreciate our own personal individuality. To live with openness, authenticity and gratitude is to never abandon ourselves, to never give up and to never lose.
Love the madness. Trust the process. Be yourself.
