Chris....there is a positive side to this. An amazing opportunity exists for the United States if we can be the first country to seize the lead in living responsibly in the 21st century. There would be no limit to the rewards, and there is nothing stopping us from realizing them.

This is ABSOLUTELY correct! Fitness and a healthy lifestyle are preventative care! The healthier you are, the less likely you will have to deal with these diseases of a toxic lifestyle! And the last line hits the nail on the head, no one will be helped until they decide to help themselves! There are far too many looking for help from others, when really, they are more than capable of helping themselves..they just don't see it. No healthcare reform can help those who aren't willing to work hard to make their lives better

I totally agree that a lack of self-discipline is the real issue when it comes to blaming fast food for bad nutrition and obesity. But the fast food restaurants are rightfully under pressure, imposed or voluntary, do their part to serve more nutritious food. Most are doing that with a variety of salads, etc., and are expected to be required to provide nutritional information on their products in the restaurants so people have a better idea of what they're consuming.

The cigarette industry has been forced to state health risks on their packages, and the U.S. auto industry was mandated to produce more fuel-efficient vehicles. While consumers are at liberty to smoke despite the well-documented health risks, and have shown a preference for foreign-made vehicles that get better gas mileage, it's clear people won't always make the right decisions on their own. And we all know what the government is doing in an attempt to limit excesses in the banking/financial services industry, despite the disclosure guidelines on lending & investing already required.

All this tell us that some level of forced compliance in the food industry makes sense to augment the education and tough-love lessons on self-discipline that Billy the Coach is rightly doling out.

Bill;

I could not agree with your more. We should not have to pay for others unwillingness to become responsible body managers. Our health is the #1 currency in this world ... I am not sure what needs to be done for more people to realize this.
